Training Program on Developing Transformational Leadership organised

Bhilai, Sep 11: A two-day training program on ‘Developing Transforma-tional Leader-ship’ in SAIL-Bhilai Steel Plant was inaugurated at BMDC by AK Bhatta, ED (Projects). The faculty of this HR intervention was Dr SN Singh, ex-ED (P&A), Bokaro Steel Ltd and ex-GM (HRD), BSP. The program participants included CGMs and HoDs from across the Plant.
In his address, Bhatta said that with almost all the big global players like Arcelor Mittal having set foot firmly in India and our competitors are expanding very rapidly, the domestic steel industry is in the cusp of momentous change. A lot of consolidation is taking place in the steel industry. For SAIL to move into the big league, we need agility and adaptability to continue the learning momentum. Business challenges, particularly disruptions demand decision-making without procrastination.
While some of the MODEX units in Bhilai had been commissioned very well, the challenge for the leadership in the new units is to extract maximum out of the installed modern systems like Level-II automation, he said. Highlighting the challenges being faced by existing establishment units like Rail & Strl Mill, Bhatta spelt out certain options for the Mill to adapt its product mix.
Addressing the participants, Faculty for the HR programme, Dr SN Singh said that the topics being covered by him will open up new paradigms of self-learning and discovery which will help participants discharge their leadership roles with perfection. As per the views of various management experts, transformational leaders are known to rise and pay attention to employee needs and motivate the employees to perform better leading to employee satisfaction.
Transformational leaders have significant impact on job satisfaction and organizational commitment, Dr Singh said. He also referred to the outcome of a study on leadership empowering behaviour that was conducted by him for senior management level officers along with representatives of all Plants of SAIL.
Earlier, welcoming the Chief Guest, the expert faculty and the participants, Saurabh Sinha, GM (HRD) informed that transformational leadership behaviour at senior management level in SAIL has been identified by the SAIL Board that needs more attention.
Chairman, SAIL has entrusted the HR function to develop the leadership pipeline to take SAIL into the new league through development of leaders and effective succession planning for the future.
Sanjeev Shrivastava, DGM (HRD) introduced the faculty of the two-day HR, Dr Singh as having served in BSP for 37 years in different areas of the plant in different positions before being promoted and transferred to Bokaro as ED (P&A).
Dr Singh has done research work on Role of leadership influencing employee performance in public sector steel unit with reference to BSP for which he was awarded PhD.
The topics covered during the two-day program included Inside-out approach, Self Awareness, Self-Motivation, Self-Management; Self-Leadership, Proactivity; Modelling, Creating Influence, Building Trust (Character& Competence); Full Range Leadership and Transformational leadership; Importance of Transformational leadership and comparison with transactional leadership and Empowerment & Tools for Empowerment.
