SRGI celebrates World No tobacco Day

Bhilai, May 31: World No tobacco Day (WNTD) is observed around the world every year on May 31. A live Webinar was organized by Department of Oral Medicine & Radiology on Monday to mark the day, by Rungta College of Dental Sciences and Research, Bhilai, (CG) under the aegis of Sanjay Rungta Group of Institutions (SRGI). The theme of the webinar was focused on “Commit to Quit”. The webinar was attended by about 400 participants comprising of eminent faculties, dentists and undergraduate and postgraduate students from all over India.
Eminent Keynote speaker was Dr Aruna DS, BDS, MDS (Public Health Dentistry), PGD in Health Promotion, accredited TCC Specialist & Foundation of Addiction Medicine. She delivered lecturers on how tobacco smoking and consumption of smokeless or chewing tobacco have affected lives of billions of people, posing an enormous public health challenge in its complexity, scale and impact, both at an individual and nation-wide level. The program was inaugurated by Sanjay Rungta, the Chairman of the Institution. The webinar outlined the importance of the issues of Nicotine addiction, National guidelines for tobacco
cessation, Interventional strategies (the 5A’s), common problems while quitting with their solutions and relapse prevention. The Dean of the college Dr Karthik Krishna M said that this online webinar is an opportunity to raise awareness about the dangers of using tobacco and how a number of health problems can be better tackled by doctors or averted when one quits smoking. The Convener of the program, Dr Ganapathi Moger welcomed everyone to the webinar.
Dr Fatima Khan, as Organizing secretary and the scientific chairperson of the event, inaugurated the webinar with mentioning the need of quitting tobacco, especially at this time of Covid-19 pandemic, as smokers face up to 50 percent more risk of developing severe disease and even death. Dr Deeplaxmi Dewangan, as Joint organizing secretary of webinar conducted the valedictory session.
The participants were awarded e-certificates. To commemorate World no tobacco day, e-poster competition was conducted for undergraduate and post-graduate students. Overwhelming response was received from the participants. The 1st, 2nd and consolation for best poster in UG category was awarded to Apoorva Dhopte , Kritika Yadav and Anshika Das respectively.
In the PG category the 1st and 2nd prize was awarded to Dr Rakesh Sahu and Dr Kritika Kejriwal respectively. The event was co-ordinated by Dr Sourav Bose, Dr Ayesha Roul, Dr Ekta Sawriya & Dr Khushbu Jain. They played a vital role as coordinators to make the event a grand success.
