SAIL Chairman witnesses steel making operations, interacts with members of the workforce

Bhilai, Jun 12: On Saturday, the second day of her maiden visit to Bhilai Steel Plant, Chairman SAIL, Soma Mondal visited various units of the Plant and witnessed steel making and other operations. Soma Mondal first visited the newly setup JUMBO Covid Care Centre where she observed the facilities and hailed the Bhilai collective for establishing this centre. Chairman SAIL, Smt Mondal, SAIL’s Director (Technical, Projects & Raw Materials) Harinand Rai, Director I/c (BSP) Anirban Dasgupta planted saplings at the Centre. Chairman SAIL then visited the Safety Excellence Centre next to Plant’s Main Gate, where she was apprised about safety instructions.
Chairman SAIL then visited Ore Handling Plant, Part B where she was explained the details of the proposed Base Mix Plant with the help of layout and drawing. The Base mix plant that is proposed to be located next to RMP 3 would help in proper mixing and homogenisation of raw materials including Iron ore with fluxes Dolomite, Limestone. It would aid in blending and pre-preparing the mixture of raw materials by partially baking it.
This would help in improved productivity, less material wastage and lead to reduction in return Sinter. Accompanied by Director, HN Rai, Director I/c BSP, Anirban Dasgupta, she went around the Plant’s MGR (Merry Go Round) on a saloon.
Addressing employees at OHP, Chairman SAIL stated that we have done well so far. Each one of us however has to contribute more and do a little extra to do better. Mondal then visited Sinter Plant 3 where she witnessed sinter making in Machine 2. At SP 3, Chairman SAIL re-planted a banyan tree that was re-located.
She also visited Sinter Plant 2 where she urged employees to scale up sinter production so as to meet daily production targets. Addressing employees, Chairman SAIL said Bhilai Steel Plant has always been the most important unit of SAIL. As such the organisation has high expectations from the Plant.
Soma Mondal then witnessed steel-making operations in different Modex units of the Plant including Blast Furnace 8 (BF 8), Steel Melting Shop 3 (SMS 3), Bar & Rod Mill (BRM) and Universal Rail Mill (URM). Addressing members of the Universal Rail Mill team, SAIL’s Director (Technical, Projects & Raw Materials) Harinand Rai urged them to enhance the daily production levels.
Congratulating Team URM for having successfully rolling out the new grade and profile of rails as per Indian Railway’s requirements, Chairman SAIL, said we all know that India runs on SAIL rails. You have done well, but we still have miles to go, she added.
After the Plant visit, Mondal met Union representatives and discussed various issues including wage revision and employee welfare at Director I/c (BSP)’s Conference Hall. During the first day of her visit, Smt Mondal had interacted with members of MSME, Officers Association and SC/ST Association in separate meetings.
Later, SAIL’s Director (Technical, Projects & Raw Materials) Harinand Rai interacted with senior officers about Plant Performance, production, planning and strategy ahead on Zoom platform. ED (Operations), Corporate Office Devdas, Executive Directors of the Plant including ED(M & HS) Dr SK Issar, ED (MM) Rakesh, ED (Projects) AK Bhatta, ED (P & A) SK Dubey, ED (Works) Anjani Kumar, CGM I/c (F & A) S Rangani and Chief General Managers of the Plant participated.
