Statue of Sir M Visvesvaraya unveiled on Engineers’ Day

Bhilai, Sep 15: A statue of country’s first Civil Engineer, Bharat Ratna Sir Mokshagundam Visvesvaraya was unveiled by PWD and Home Minister Tamradhwaj Sahu during a gracious function held at Rajendra Park Square in Durg on Thursday. Agriculture and Water Resources Minister Ravindra Choube presided over the programme. The statue, with an attractive back drop, has been installed here jointly by the Public Works Department, Durg and Tandula Water Resources Division, Durg. The statue of the legendry engineer was inaugurated on the occasion of Engineers’ Day.

 

In his address, Home Minister Tamradhwaj Sahu said that Sir Mokshagundam Visvesvaraya was an eminent statesman and engineer and we are humbled by his simplicity. Sahu said that our engineers are very talented. The district is recognized throughout the country due to Bhilai Steel Plant. He urged the engineers to create and conduct some model work in Durg city also so that Durg city can be recognised for engineering innovation. The Home Minister said that to give employment to the engineers, they have been engaged in big projects. About 5000 engineers have been engaged in various projects. About 16000 crore projects are going on in the state.

In his address, Water Resources Minister Ravindra Choubey said that the contribution of Sir M Visvesvaraya is not only important for the country, but he made the Indian talent recognised all over the world. He added that at the time when the Krishnaraj Sagar Dam was to be built on the river Kaveri and British experts had said that this dam would not be built, it was Sir M Visvesvaraya who accepted this challenge and built the dam which was a marvelous piece of engineering of his time. He said that when we look at our water resources structures which are even 100 years old, we feel how strong our engineers must have built them. We feel proud of our engineers. Choubey anticipated that these structures will last for another 100 years. He congratulated Suresh Pandey, Executive Engineer, Water Resources Department and Ashok Srivas, Executive Engineer, Public Works Department for the installation of the statue. He appreciated the Executive Engineer Suresh Pandey for his special initiative to install the statue of Sir Mokshagundam Visvesvaraya.

MLA Arun Vora, Mayor Dheeraj Bakliwal, District Panchayat President Shalini Yadav, former MLA Pratima Chandrakar and other dignitaries were present. Ashok Srivas (Executive Engineer, Public Works Department), Suresh Pandey (Executive Engineer, Tandula Water Resources Division, Durg) and other engineers and officials of PWD, Water Resources Department and other departments were present.
