Breast Cancer Awareness week observed at JLN Hospital and RC

Bhilai, Oct 28: Jawaharlal Nehru Hospital and Research Centre, Sector 9 is observing Breast Cancer Awareness week from October 25- 30, 2021 under the guidance of Dr SK Issar, ED(M & HS), CMOs Dr M Ravindranath and Dr Pramod Binayake.
The main programme was conducted on October 26, 2021 by the department of Radiodiagnosis. Dr Pratibha Issar (HoD), Dr Rajeev Pal, Dr Lata Dewangan, Dr Dhiraj Gupta, DNBs and the departmental staff were present on the occasion.
A Poster competition was organized in OPD block, followed by the prize distribution for posters in the conference hall. Posters were made by DNBs, PG nursing college and Shankara Nursing college students, nicely depicting the importance of breast cancer awareness.
This was followed by a brief address to the audience by Dr Pratibha Issar, explaining that breast cancer is the most common cancer prevalent in Indian females. Early detection is essential in its management and treatment.
According to ICMR, every year, we have 1.5 lakhs new breast cancer cases in India, of which 70,000 succumb every year, so there is mortality rate of 50%.
Since Breast cancers are diagnosed at later stages i.e. Stage 3 and 4 in India. In order to reduce incidence of advanced cancer, self and clinical breast examination is the most affordable screening method in India.
ICMR guidelines say every woman above 40 years should have mammography examination at least once in two years. Dr Ravindranath said that the woman is the main pivot of the family, so we must help her in early detection of breast cancer.
Breast biopsy gives us the final diagnosis which we are regularly performing in JLNHRC. Dr SK Issar emphasized the role of self breast examination, mammography and ultrasound in early detection which is the key to prevent breast cancer. The programme concluded with the distribution of patient information pamphlets prepared by Dr Pratibha Issar.
