Martyrs remembered on Police Commemoration Day

Bhilai, Oct 21: On the occasion of Police Commemoration Day, rich tributes were paid to the brave hearts those who lost their lives for the country in line of duty. The district level programme was organised at Martyrs’ Memorial at the parade ground of 1st and 7th Battalions of Chhattisgarh Armed Force Battalions here in Bhilai.
IG (Durg Range) Vivekanand Sinha led the gathering in paying homage to the martyred police personnel. Later, he met the family members of the martyrs and honoured them with shawls and srifal. The family members of the martyrs shared their problems with the top cops. IGP Sinha directed his subordinates to take immediate action for resolving the problems.
Police Commemoration Day owes its origin to clash with Chinese troops in the Hot Springs area of Ladakh in the year 1959. The CRPF was given the responsibility of maintaining security in the frontier region and manning the border posts.
A reconnaissance squad was captured by Chinese soldiers near the Kongka Pass. A search operation launched for the missing squad resulted in a clash, with 10 police personnel losing their lives on October 21, 1959. Since then, the day has been marked every year to remember their sacrifice as well as of all the police personnel who have lost their lives in service of the nation.
In the year 220-21, a total of 377 police personnel lost their lives in service of the nation. Here in Chhattisgarh, 32 policemen made supreme sacrifice in line of duty. 11 cops of Andhra Pradesh, 3 of Arunachal Pradesh, 06 of Bihar, 7 from Assam, 4 from Jharkhand, 4 from Himachal Pradesh, 16 of Karnataka, 2 of Kerala, 15 of Madhya Pradesh, 1 of Laddakh, 3 of Manipur, one from Meghalaya, 4 from Orissa, two from Punjab, two from Rajasthan, one from Tamil Nadu, four from Uttar Pradesh, three from Uttarakhand, 17 in West Bengal, two from Andaman and Nicobar, two of Chandigarh, 6 of Delhi, 17 of J&K, three of Assam Rifles, 47 of Border Security Force,8 of CISF,82 of CRPF, 3 of SF/CD/HG, 54 of ITBP, one of NSG, 5 of SSB, one of NDRF and eight men of RPF are included in this year’s list.
