World Environment Day celebrations at Bhilai Steel Plant

Bhilai, Jun 05: World Environment Day was celebrated at SAIL-Bhilai Steel Plant on Saturday, June 05 by the employees of different departments. In view of the restrictions & guidelines of Government of India to avoid mass gatherings because of the prevailing COVID pandemic, care had been taken to celebrate the event at the departmental level, mainly through planting of saplings.
Anirban Dasgupta, Director I/c Bhilai Steel Plant planted saplings at the Plant’s HRDC premises. Dr SK Issar, ED (M&HS), AK Bhatta, ED (Projects), SK Dubey, ED (P&A) and other senior officers of the Plant also planted saplings at HRDC. At a plantation program jointly arranged at the Steel Slag Yard by Environment Management Dept, BSP & M/s FSNL, Bhilai, Arvind Kumar, CGM I/c (M&U), BSP planted saplings along with senior officers and members of Environment Management Department and FSNL.
Extending his greetings to all and seeking their cooperation in keeping the Plant & Township clean and green, he stressed on the importance of protecting the greenery to maintain biodiversity of the region. Uma Katoch, GM (Environment), K Praveen GM (Environment), VK Pathak, DGM (Environment), D Chattopadhya and CN Jha from FSNL and other officers & employees from Environment Management Department & FSNL were present on the occasion. Reusable bags with environment protection messages were distributed amongst employees. Plantation in individual departments in Plant & township were also undertaken under the leadership of respective HODs with employees actively participating in plantation activities to show their support to the global call to kickstart activities under “Eco-system Restoration Decade” as declared by United Nations.
An online Quiz on environment along with Poster & Slogan competitions are also being organized by Environment Management Department for the employees of the Plant to create awareness on the theme given by United Nations this year i.e “Restoring of ecosystem – “Reimaging. Recreating, Restoring.” Saplings were planted at CSR Dept premises located in GHSS, Sect 5 by SK Dubey, ED (P&A), PK Ghosh, CGM (TSD) and members of the Town Services Department including Horticulture.
Addressing the gathering, Dubey said that not only do trees help maintain ecological balance but they also provide us free oxygen in large volumes. In his address, Ghosh said that planting trees should not be our only objective. We must give equal importance to saving trees. Speaking on the occasion, Dr GK Dubey, GM (Horticulture & PHD) informed that Horticulture has set a target of planting 82,000 saplings with the help of Van Vikas Nigam in 2021-22.
Saplings were also planted by UK Jha, CGM (TSD), Shri Deshpande, GM (TSD) and other officers and members of TSD. Tree plantation was also organized at various other locations by Town Services Department.
