Discussions on main challenges of the rural India held

Transform Rural India Foundation in collaboration with   Chhattisgarh Government, and Pt Ravi Shankar Shukla University, Raipur and, ‘India Rural Colloquy titled “Samaj Sarkar Bazar in New Village” was organised with the focus on the future of rural India. The program was inaugurated by Chief Guest Dr.Sachchidanand Shukla, Vice Chancellor  and Ajay Singh (IAS), Vice Chairman of Chhattisgarh State Planning Commission and  Anish Kumar, Managing Director of Transform Rural India Foundation. The purpose of the program was to present a common platform dedicated to insightful discussions on the main challenges of the rural India intertwined in poverty & inequality where representatives of the society-government & market, and scholars shared their views.

The first session was based on the theme “Deep Dive to a Billion Dreams”, which focused on understanding the aspirations of rural India at present. The session was represented by Youth, panchayat representatives and family members from rural areas of Chhattisgarh who expressed the rapidly changing aspirations of the community. Employment opportunity leading to more than a lakh of income, quality education & becoming successful farmer were a few aspirations to name. Bimbati Bag, VO representative from Dantewada highlighted the power of collective action and transformational change by saying “ SHG instilled the strength to break societal barriers and fostered confidence for engaging in sustainable livelihood practices”. After listening to the good thoughts of all the speakers,  Padmini Bhoi Sahu (IAS), State Mission Manager State Rural Livelihood Mission “BIHAN” said, “Handholding support is required to facilitate empowerment of rural women. Historically, women’s mobility is restricted, CLF, SHGs, VO are platforms for building empowered and responsible communities.

The second session was based on the theme “Regenerative Development: A Whole of Society Approach”.  Prasanna, Secretary, Panchayat and Rural Development Department, Government of Chhattisgarh (IAS), Rajat Bansal, MNREGA Commissioner, Ms. Anantika, Hindustan Unilever and Ms. Rajshree Balwant Deshpande, founder Nabhangan Foundation (Bollywood actress) shared her views on the theme. The above speakers focused on democratization of development through decentralization of power, technology-based intervention for sustained change and improved productivity and whole of society approach specifically CSOs as an external catalyst have very important role to play. Overall, the emphasis was given to regenerative and climate-friendly farming, soil conservation, carbon footprint and water harvesting, and its impact on livelihood development.

Dr.Kamalpreet Singh Secretary, Agricultural Department emphasis on “The agriculture sector is undergoing rapid transformation. However, to achieve a fair market, producers must be empowered to effectively market their products. Renowned social worker Dr. Shankar Dutta; economist Dr. Ravindra Kumar Brahme, Professor and Head of the Department, Economics also expressed their views emphasizing on fair market practices, empowering rural producers, and embracing digital commerce which can serve as pivotal steps towards a more inclusive and prosperous future for rural society.

The final theme of the program was “The Making of New Village – Interrogating Caste and the impact of Occupational shifts on structural barriers to the inter-generational Mobility”.  Anish Kumar, Managing Director of Transform Rural India Foundation brought attention to how division of labor actually got converted into division of labourers. Pradeep Sharma, Advisor, elaborated on history of the caste formation and said , “the caste system is not just a random assortment of social divisions but rather a product of deliberate social organization based on occupational roles. Efforts to break down caste-based occupational restrictions and challenging the traditional barriers to social mobility are essential steps toward fostering a more inclusive and just society & Chhattisgarh’s RIPA programme is a positive step towards it.
