Three heart valves operated simultaneously at ACI

Raipur, Dec 03: Operation of all the three valves of the heart of a 45-year-old patient, resident of Surajpur was performed successfully in the Heart, Chest and Vascular Surgery department of Advance Cardiac Institute in Dr Bhimrao Ambedkar Memorial Hospital, affiliated to Pandit Jawaharlal Nehru Memorial Medical College, Raipur.
All three valves of the patient’s heart had become defective, due to rheumatic heart disease. In this operation, the two valves of the patient’s heart named aortic and mitral were replaced with metal valves and the tricuspid valve was repaired with rings, said Heart, Chest and Vascular Surgeon and Head of Department Dr Krishnakant Sahu who led the operation.
In medical term, this operation is called “Aortic valve replacement with Bi-leaflet mechanical valve plus mitral valve replacement with bi-leaflet mechanical valve plus tricuspid valve repair by tricuspid aneuplasty ring”. The patient is now ready to go home with recovery. After the successful operation, the relatives of the patient say that there was a slight delay in the operation but they are feeling very happy with the outcome.
This patient was suffering from breathlessness for the last five years due to narrowing and leakage in the heart valves. This condition is called “Rheumatic heart disease with severe aortic stenosis with severe aortic regurgitation plus severe tricuspid valve regurgitation”.
Regarding the patient’s disease history, Heart, Chest and Vascular surgeon Dr Krishnakant Sahu says that this patient reached ACI from Surajpur district for the treatment of breathlessness. After echocardiography in ACI, it was found that this patient had contracture and leakage in the heart valves. That too in all the three valves of the heart called aortic, mitral and tricuspid.
Normally the heart of a normal healthy person has four valves which are known as aortic, mitral, tricuspid and pulmonary valves respectively. The main function of these valves is to allow the blood to flow in one direction so that the blood of the heart can reach all the organs in sufficient quantity and smoothly. If any of these valves fails, the heart begins to weaken raising the risk of heart failure.
Due to the weakening of the heart, the patient starts feeling short of breath and swelling occurs in the legs and body. The heart is also like a pump and has non-returning valves. Just as the valve of a motor pump is damaged, the motor becomes weak and cannot pump properly, in the same way the heart is also like a pump. Rheumatic Heart Disease (RHD) is the biggest cause of heart valve disease in Central India and North India including Chhattisgarh.
