Rupee rises 13 paise at 73.78 against USD, gold rises Rs 439

Mumbai, May 06 (PTI): The rupee strengthened by 13 paise to end at 73.78 (provisional) against the US dollar on Thursday, supported by positive domestic equities and weak American currency.
At the interbank forex market, the local unit opened at 73.87 against the greenback and witnessed an intra-day high of 73.77 and a low of 74.
It finally ended at 73.78 against the American currency, registering a rise of 13 paise over its previous closing.
On Wednesday, the rupee had settled at 73.91 against the American currency. Meanwhile, the dollar index, which gauges the greenback’s strength against a basket of six currencies, fell 0.30 per cent to 91.03. Gold in the national capital on Thursday rose by Rs 439 to Rs 46,680 per 10 gram reflecting recovery in global precious metal prices, according to HDFC Securities. In the previous trade, the metal had closed at Rs 46,241 per 10 gram.
Silver also rallied Rs 1,302 to Rs 69,511 per kilogram from Rs 68,209 per kilogram in the previous trade.
In the international market, gold was trading with gains at USD 1,792 per ounce and silver was trading flat at USD 26.72 per ounce.
“Gold prices got support from weaker dollar as traders and investors are waiting key US data,” according to HDFC Securities, Senior Analyst (Commodities), Tapan Patel.
