World glaucoma week observed in Ophthalmology Department of Medical College

Raipur, Mar 15: World Glaucoma Week 2021 was organised from 7th March to 13th March on the theme ‘the world is bright save your sight!’ at Department of Opthalmology in Pt Jawaharlal Nehru Memorial Medical College-Dr Bhimrao Ambedkar Memorial Hospital Raipur. The objective of celebrating world glaucoma week is to raise awareness on glaucoma and make every person aware and alert to undergo regular eye (and optic nerve) tests for early detection of glaucoma.
Various programmes were organised by the Medical College on the occasion of World Glaucoma Week 2021 which commenced on 7th March with a symposium in Ward No 15 of the ophthalmology department of Ambedkar Hospital. Arrangements for regular perimetry test (visual field test) were made for the patients in opthalmology department OPD. PG Students of Ayurved Medical College were given information about Glaucoma check-up and treatment on March 10.
On March 13 variety of programmes were organised at Physiotherapy Hall of Hospital to mark the conclusion of Glaucoma Week. Medical College and AIIMS students enthusiastically took part in the programmes. Quiz and debate competition were the major attractions of concluding ceremony of the week. Medical students who were victorious in both these competitions were awarded. All these programmes were organized under the leadership of Dr Nidhi Pandey, Head of the Department of Ophthalmology.
According to Dr Nidhi Pandey Glaucoma is a disease that usually occurs after the age of 40. Therefore, every person after 40 years should undergo glaucoma examination of their eyes every year. People with a family history of glaucoma, those who have diabetes and blood pressure and those who received injuries in eyes can be at risk of glaucoma.
Although it is not possible to compensate for the loss due to glaucoma, the regular check-up and the use of medicines as prescribed by the ophthalmologists can help prevent further loss of eye-sight. Ex-Dean Dr PK Mukherjee, Dean Dr Vishnu Dutt, Kanker Medical College Dean Dr ML Gerg, State Programme Officer in Blindness Control Dr Subhash Mishra were chief guests at the concluding ceremony of world glaucoma week. Ambedkar Hospital Superintendent Dr Vinit Jain, AIIMS Assistant Professor Dr Vijaya Sahu, Dr Lubna Khan, Head of Orthopaedics Department Dr SN Phuljhele, Dr Swati Kujur, Dr Santosh Singh Patel and Dr Sushil Sachdev were present on the occasion. Moreover Dr Anusuia Dutt, Dr Padma Dubey and Eye Assistant Sanjay Sharma from District Hospital attended the concluding ceremony.
