Nearly 167 cases of loss of public life due to wild elephants, bears

Raipur, Mar 02: Nearly 167 cases pertaining to loss of public life due to wild elephants and bears have come to fore during the last two years in the state. Reports of crop damage too were received and that there is a provision of giving compensation to the farmers at the rate of Rs 9000 per acre.
This was informed by Forest Minister Md Akbar in written reply to the question of Congress MLA Arun Vora during question hour of Chhattisgarh Assembly on Tuesday.
Vora had sought number of cases of loss of public life due to wild elephants and bears in the state during the last two years. He also sought to know the extent of damage caused to the crops of the farmers due to wild elephants during said period.
Vora also wanted to know the provision about rate and limit of compensation to be paid to the farmers for crop damage.
In reply the Forest Minister Akbar said that 167 cases of loss of public life due to wild elephants and bears were reported during the last two years. During this period wild elephants damaged crop on 11861.46 hectare areas of 47 thousand 244 farmers.
In case of crop damage there is a provision of providing compensation to the farmers at the rate of Rs 9 thousand per acre, he said. He said that no limit had been specified yet for compensation.
