Baikunthpur, Sep 09: The Mahatma Gandhi National Rural Employment Guarantee Scheme (MNREGA), is turning a key ally in many livelihood projects, here in the district. Many Self Help Groups (SHGs) are moving ahead on the path of economic development by engaging in livelihood projects, based on agriculture and fishery here.
One such village is Singhat, of Janpad Panchayat Khadgawa, which has created a niche for itself, as many women folks of the village, have turned to livelihood projects under the aegis of MNREGA, and are generating major financial goals, thus venturing out of traditional farming methods.
The women under Jai Maa Saraswati Self Help Group, have leased a village pond, and have turned the pond into a fishing bed. After MNREGA, helped the village in deepening the pond, the villagers, of newly formed Gram Panchayat Singhta have found an aid in financial dependency by generating extra income through fish rearing and harvesting, and also beating malnutrition.
Sarpanch of Singhat, Ramnarayan Singh, informed, that a pond named panchayati talaab, near the village school, came to the rescue of the villagers occupied in fish rearing.
The pond, some 16 year old, was knee deep immersed in dirt and marine plants, and was of no big use for the villagers, but after the pond was deepened and cleaned , at a cost of 6 lakh, 83 thousand, under MNREGA, fishing has become a big time occupation and employment generating scheme for the villagers, he said.
