BJP targets Cong govt over law and order

Raipur, Feb 23 (PTI): The BJP on Tuesday targeted the Bhupesh Baghel government on the second day of Chhattisgarh Assembly’s budget session over what it claimed was the deteriorating law and order situation in the state.
The charges made by the opposition party, which ruled the state for 15 years till it was unseated by the Congress in late 2018, were dismissed by state home minister Tamradhwaj Sahu.
BJP legislators Brijmohan Agrawal, Ajay Chandrakar and Shivratan Sharma, and Janata Congress Chhattisgarh (J) MLA Dharmjeet Singh sought a discussion on the “collapsed” law and order situation in the state and moved an adjournment motion notice.
Sahu said all incidents of crime mentioned by the BJP were probed quickly and in detail by police and necessary action, including arrest, was taken in most of them. He said the state police had, in several cases, filed the charge sheet within 24 hours to three days of the crime taking place, and many of the accused have been given punishment, including life imprisonment, after trials lasting 10 to 50 days. After the minister’s reply, Speaker Charan Das Mahant allowed a discussion on the admissibility of the adjournment motion notice, during which BJP leader and former CM Raman Singh accused the Baghel government of turning the state from an “island of peace” to a “safe haven for criminals”.
Later the speaker dismissed the motion, which was opposed by the BJP claiming the Leader of Opposition Dharamlal Kaushik was not even allowed to speak.
Thirteen sloganeering BJP MLAs trooped into the Well of the House and were automatically suspended, which was later revoked by the speaker.
