About One Ocean Summit:

France is hosting the One Ocean Summit from February 9-11 in Brest, France, in collaboration with the United Nations and the World Bank. The objective of the Summit is to mobilize the international community to take tangible action towards preserving and supporting healthy and sustainable ocean ecosystems.

The first major event of a “super year” for the ocean, the Summit is an opportunity to kick-off the second year of the Ocean Decade with the first big international commitment to protect the ocean and reverse its declining health.

The ocean, which covers more than 70% of our planet, provides us with food, regulates our climate, and produces the majority of the oxygen we breathe. The ocean is also the foundation for much of the world’s economy, supporting industries ranging from tourism to fisheries to international shipping.

To protect it, the goal of the One Ocean Summit is to raise the international community’s collective level of ambition on marine issues and to translate shared responsibility to the ocean into tangible commitments.

Several significant initiatives are being launched on this occasion in support of marine ecosystem protection and sustainable fisheries, with the goal of combating pollution, particularly from plastics, responding to the effects of climate change, and advocating for improved ocean governance.
