In a major setback to the Myanmar, the new United Nations report puts Myanmar’s armed forces on a UN blacklist.
The list includes government and rebel groups who are credibly suspected of carrying out rapes and other acts of sexual violence in conflict for the first time.
This is said to have been on the basis of documentation done by international medical staff and others in Bangladesh.
It is said that many of the almost 7,00,000 Rohingya Muslims who fled from Myanmar had to bear the physical and psychological scars of brutal sexual assault.
It is also alleged that the assaults were allegedly perpetrated by the Myanmar Armed Forces.
They were in many cases also assisted by local militias in what came to be known as military ‘clearance’ operations in October 2016 and August 2017.
Buddhist-majority Myanmar doesn’t recognize the Rohingya as an ethnic group and insists that they are Bengali migrants from Bangladesh living illegally in the country.
It has denied them citizenship leaving them for all practical purposes stateless.
