Speaker tells govt to enact law for migrant labourers

Raipur: Chhattisgarh Vidhan Sabha Speaker Dr Charandas Mahant today directed the state government to consider formulating a law for the labourers who are migrating to other states in search of livelihood.

Intervening into supplementary questions raised by the BJP MLA Dr Krishnamurthy Bandhi on this issue during question hour under ongoing monsoon session of Vidhan Sabha today, the Speaker said that the government should consider formulating a concrete law for the skilled and unskilled labourers migrating to other states in search of livelihood.

According to Speaker many labourers in Chhattisgarh migrate to other states across the country to work in brick kilns as they are considered experts in this work. Earlier BJP MLA Dr Bandhi said that labourers migrating to other states in search of livelihood were tortured and harassed by the police and contractors. He demanded to omit the term ‘migration’. No concrete measures were taken yet to safeguard interests of the labourers, he said, adding that reports on labourers being kept hostage are often received.

Labour Minister Dr Shiv Dahria said that the government was acting instantly on the reports about labourers being kept hostages after their migration to other states in search of livelihood. As soon as information is received, action is taken immediately for rescue of bonded labourers, he said, adding that support of the concerned district collectors also sought in rescuing the labourers. Apart from rescue, some legal actions are taken on such cases, he informed. Labourers are instantly given compensation of Rs 20,000 in the matter of keeping them hostage. Besides this, there is provision of compensation in other cases, he informed.
