Sedition Law reforms needed
- Yash Pal Ralhan, Jalandhar
The Lahore High Court’s decision to annul Section 124A of the sedition law is a step towards progress. In India, however, the sedition law is still in abeyance, which is a matter of concern. The sedition law was enacted during British colonial rule in 1860 and is now being used for political purposes. This law is a violation of the right to freedom of expression, which is granted to every citizen by the Constitution of Pakistan. The sedition law is a tool to suppress dissent and has been used against citizens who criticize the rulers. It is high time that India also takes a cue from Pakistan and rethinks the sedition law. The law should be reformed so that it cannot be used to curb the freedom of speech and expression of citizens.
