Ruffian arrested from Delhi for Rs 10 lakh insurance fraud

Bhilai, Oct 10: Police have arrested a youth from Delhi in connection with Rs 10 lakh insurance fraud. About half of the duped amount has been recovered. Addressing media persons here at Police Control Room on Saturday, SP Prashant Thakur informed that on August 21, they had received a complaint from the victim Shankar Rao Katre regarding this insurance fraud.
The victim had purchased a policy of SBI Life Insurance in the year 2013. In the months of July – August 2020, he received mobile calls from some Alok Sharma and Ashish Sharma, who introduced themselves as officers of the insurance company. They lured the victim to pay almost Rs 10 lakhs in instalments in pretext of increasing the value of the insurance policy.
During investigation, it was discovered that the accused were based in Delhi. Taking the matter into serious cognizance, two teams led by Sub Inspector Rajeev Tiwari were sent to Delhi while the Cyber Team led by Inspector Naresh Patel provided inputs to the teams. Later it was discovered that the duped amount has been transferred to various bank accounts. Accordingly, the police teams visited several banks and collected information regarding those accounts and the account holders. The sustained efforts bore fruitful results and finally the police team rounded up Ashish Sharma from Mayur Vihar, Delhi.
During interrogation, Ashish Sharma disclosed his real identity as Viraj Gupta (24) son of Shyam Babu Gupta a resident of New Ashok Nagar, East Delhi. He confessed to have duped Rs 10 lakh from Shankar Rao Katre. He further disclosed that his friend Deepak Mehta also assisted him in committing this crime. Police recovered 12 nos mobile phones, 14 nos debit / credit cards, 5 nos dairies have details of the customers, driving license, voter cards and pan cards in name of Viraj Gupta, Ashish Sharma and Alok Sharma, bank passbooks, cheque books, and Rs 17000 cash. Police got Rs 4.5 lakh freezed in various bank accounts.
The accused Viraj Gupta alias Ashish Sharma (24) son of Shyam Babu Gupta a resident of New Ashok Nagar, Delhi has been brought to Durg on transit remand. He has been booked under the provisions mentioned in section 420, 34 of IPC. ASP (City) Rohit Jha, DSP (Crime) Praveer Chandra Tiwari and CSP (Bhilai) Ajeet Yadav were also present during press conference. Sub Inspector Rajeev Tiwari, Head Constable Santosh Mihra, Chandra Shekhar Banjir, Constable Anup Sharma, Jugnu Singh, Santosh Gupta, Harish Singh, Javed Hussein Khan and B Veer Narayan played vital role in arresting the accused.
