Police puzzled over alleged mass suicide incidence

Bhilai, Mar 07: Sensation prevailed in Village Bathena and adjoining areas on the second consecutive day after recovery of five bodies. The father-son duo were found hanging with the same rope while three charred human skeletal remains were recovered from the heap of ashes nearby.
It is being anticipated that the skeletal remains are of the three female members of the family. On Sunday, top cops and crime experts remained present at the crime scene to collect evidences.
Identity of the charred remains will be ascertained through DNA analysis. On the other hand, police are puzzled whether it is a mass suicide case or murder-cum-suicide incidence.
The possibilities of homicide cannot be overlooked. Police are trying to connect the links to prepare a strong evidence based theory after getting instructions directly from the Home Minister.
It is the second sensational incident involving multiple deaths which occurred in Chief Minister’s constituency within few weeks.
According to information, Police received information around 16:45 hrs on Saturday regarding two hanging bodies at village Bathena, located about three kilometres from Patan Police Station.
Police team immediately reached the spot and found that Ram Brij Gaikwad (55) and his son Sanju Gaikwad were hanging with the same rope at their house located in the outskirts of the village. In the meanwhile, locals informed that the heap of hay was also burnt in the fields of Gaikwad.
Police team reached there and found skeletal remains of three persons in the ashes. As the three female members of the family were missing, it is anticipated that the remains are of Ram Brij Gaikwad’s wife Janki (50); and their daughters Durga (30) and Jyoti (22).
IGP (Durg Range) Vivekanand Sinha, SP Prashant Thakur and other senior officials reached the spot to supervise the crime scene investigations. Forensic Experts collected evidence and cordoned off the crime scene.
Sniffer dogs were also pressed into service. A five-page suicide note was recovered which mentions about the financial problems of the family and indicates towards the decision of suicide. Police have sent the suicide note to handwriting expert.
Home Minister Tamradhwaj Sahu has also directed to constitute a special team for investigating the case.
