People left to fetch water worth drinking on their own

Central Chronicle News
Bhilai, May 28: The residents of Bhilai Township are feeling troubled due to supply of yellowish water through taps for the last three months. Bhilai Steel Plant management has been claiming that the water was absolutely safe for drinking but the local public representatives have different opinion.
They claim that the higher levels of turbidity prove that there are particles in the water. However due to chlorine dosing, the water become free from pathogens but the possibility of other health problems cannot be ruled out. In some sectors of Bhilai Township including sectors 1 and 2, people are fetching drinking water from tankers which are carrying water from the Treatment Plant of BMC.
Senior Corporator Bashisth Narayan Mishra has demanded from the District Collector as well as BMC Commissioner demanding immediate action over the issue and immediately stopping the supply of yellow coloured water. He further demanded to ensure supply of clean drinking water through water tankers.
He further demanded strict legal action against the BSP authorities over its failure in ensuring proper civic amenities to the residents. Explaining various causes behind the supply of dirty water in the township, Bashisth has submitted a memorandum to the foresaid administrative officials along with the test reports of water samples collected from various parts of township. He claimed that the water being supplied through taps was harmful for human health.
He stated that the water treatment plant of BSP was established in the year 1955 and it has not been taken under capital repair or renovation till date. The age old water treatment plant is failing to treat the water in expected manner in the current scenario.
The sewerage as well as water supply lines run parallel to each other in the entire township. The network of pipelines is also almost 70 years old and has suffered wear and tear with time. Due to this reason only, there have been complaints of sewer water getting mixed with tap water in several parts of the township.
The dirty water being supplied through taps can cause health problems including stones, fever, jaundice, and gastro intestinal problems. In a situation when the entire nation is suffering from Novel Coronavirus Pandemic, BSP is giving open invitation to other diseases by supplying dirty water, Bashisth said.
Citing the example of Hudco Colony, Bashisth said that about two years ago BMC spent Rs 100 crore for resolving the problem of dirty water in this colony. BMC was able to do so as this colony was handed over to the control of local civic body. On the other hand, the BSP has not even conducted cleaning of back lane in its township for the last five years.
Earlier the back-lane of all the streets was cleaned before rainy season and the spots were identified where the pipelines were damaged. Accordingly repair works were also conducted to prevent the mixing of dirty water with tap water. But it has not been done for the last five years due to which the residents are forced to consume contaminated water.
Bashisth demanded from the administration to make alternative arrangements for water supply in the township possibly through tankers and immediately stop the supply of contaminated water through taps.
He emphasized on the need of conducting repairs / renovation of the water supply as well as sewerage pipeline network as well as back lane cleaning across the township. Strict legal action must be initiated against BSP management to make it bounded for taking immediate corrective measures.
