Fani cyclone effect: Heavy rains uproot trees, disrupt power supply

Heavy rain accompanied by strong winds and lightning lashed the city on Friday evening under the influence of the ‘Fani’ cyclone in the Bay of Bengal that has hit Puri in Odisha in the morning today.
As soon as the rain started, it caused disruption in power supply, plunging many areas here into darkness for several areas. In some areas, power is yet to be restored.
The high velocity winds also uprooted trees in several places. Within no time roads turned into streams.
With no proper de-siltation of side drains, the sudden downpour led to water logging in many areas. Traffic was thrown out of gear.
Though the rain brought much needed relief from the heat, life of city dwellers was thrown out of gear because of the unexpected rainfall. Huge traffic jams were reported from areas like Sharda Chowk, Jai Stambh Chowk, Mahoba Bazar, Pachpedi Naka, Shankar Nagar, Ghadi Chowk, Moti Bagh and Station Road.
The city recorded maximum temperature of 39.7 degree Celsius which was two degrees below normal due to overcast weather prevailing throughout the day.
According to India Meteorological Department (IMD) Raipur centre, Durg recorded the highest maximum temperature of 40.8 degree Celsius in the state today. According to IMD, several other parts of Chhattisgarh too experienced rains with high velocity winds.
The IMD has forecast dry weather over Chhattisgarh in the next few days. According to it the maximum temperature may rise after next two days.
About Raipur city the IMD has predicted generally cloudy sky with possibility of rain or thundershower towards evening or night. The maximum temperature is likely to be around 39 degree Celsius.
