Raipur, May 09: Taking serious note of rampant bootlegging reported from various parts of the capital, particularly the rural areas, DIG & SSP Raipur Ajay Yadav on Saturday instructed all his subordinates to launch a concentric drive to curb this illegal practice. Acting on his directives, staffs from various police stations went into war footage and several bootleggers were arrested from different police station areas.
Acting on a specific tip off about a dhaba owner in village Kura illegally selling liquor, a police team from Dharsinwa police station raided the dhaba on the intervening night of Saturday-Sunday and nabbed red-handed the dhaba owner and two others, including a juvenile, possessing liquor and illegally selling them. Further search of the dhaba premises led to recovery of 39 litres of country liquor packed in one litre bottles and two full size bottles of foreign liquor. Identified as Naveen Kukreja, the dhaba owner was immediately taken into custody along with two employees one of whom is a juvenile and the other has been identified as Rahul Tandon. All three of them were then brought to the police station where they were later booked under Section 34-2 of Excise Act.
In another action by Kharora police, a Haryana native identified as Anil Sabharwal, was from near village Keshla after he was intercepted at a vehicle checking point and 9 bottles of full sized foreign liquor bottles were recovered from his Maruti Swift car bearing registration number HR52-G-2012. In a similar action by Arang police, a bootlegger named Nanak Banjare was intercepted at the check point at Rasni toll plaza while travelling in a Tata pickup bearing registration number CG04-MJ-7760 and 45 bottles of country liquor was recovered. Both these accused were later booked under Section 34-2 of Excise Act by respective police stations and their vehicles were also seized.
In other actions, Amanaka police arrested one Praveen Dongre from Ring Road no.2 after he was nabbed possessing 4 litres of country liquor. The next one, identified as Durgesh Banjare, was arrested by Rajendra Nagar police from Indratma Nagar near Puraina pond after he was nabbed possessing two litres of country liquor. The final one, identified as Ramakant Jagat, was arrested by Devendra Nagar police from Pandri bus stand after he was nabbed possessing 5 bottles of foreign liquor. All three accused were later booked under Section 34-1 of Excise Act by respective police stations.
