CEO reviews safety performance of Shops & Depts in Plant

Safety Performance of as many as 18 departments of Bhilai Steel Plant was reviewed by CEO, Anirban Dasgupta & his team of Executive Directors in an exercise beginning June 10, 2019, at Bhilai Niwas.
Following a presentation on current safety scenario of Bhilai Steel Plant made by GM (Safety & Fire Services) Surendra Singh, presentations on safety performance were made by each of the 18 departments including Ore Handling Plant, Sinter Plants 2 & 3, Coke Ovens & CCD, Blast Furnaces, Steel Melting Shops 1,2 and 3, Blooming & Billet Mill, Rail & Structural Mill, Universal Rail Mill, Plate Mill, Merchant Mill, Wire Rod Mill, Water Mgt Dept, Oxygen Plant 2, Propane Plant & Energy Mgt Dept.
At the outset, CEO Dasgupta set the ball rolling by underlining the importance of safety in plant operations. We must always keep in mind the need to abide by the ABC of safety that has been spelt out by our Chairman as bringing about attitudinal change, behavioural change and cultural change with regard to safety, said Dasgupta, emphasising that by doing so, not will it lead to improvement in all our Plant operations, but as individuals, we will all be benefitted in our daily lives. Following safe practices, both on the shopfloor as well as on the road should be embedded in our sub-conscious state of mind, he said.
Spelling out the need to vigorously follow up near miss cases in different shops with mitigation plans, the CEO who pointed out his own observations and gave suggestions after each presentation, emphasised that there has to be a correlation between near miss cases and action taken, which must have a direct impact on safety performance. CEO also invited ED (Works) PK Dash to express his views after each departmental presentation. Bringing about a cultural change with regard to safety should be our collective responsibility, Dasgupta said, adding that we must have short-term, medium term and long term plans for bringing about a cultural transformation with regard to safety.
The safety performance review meeting was organised by Safety Engg Dept. VK Shrivastava, DGM (SED) conducted the proceedings.
