BMC not authorized to take action against shopkeepers in Township: Jain

Township shopkeepers protest BMC’s plenary action
Central Chronicle News :
Bhilai, Jun 12: Bhilai Steel City Chambers of Commerce President Gyanchand Jain has questioned the administration regarding the authority which is authorized to control the shops and business establishments in Bhilai Township. Jain stated that after the disastrous incident of Surat, the union and state governments had swung into action for ensuring safety standards at the public places and commercial establishments. But here in Bhilai Township, which is entirely controlled by the Town Administration Department of BSP, the local civic body i.e. Bhilai Municipal Corporation is trying to interfere, conduct inspections and take penal action against the shopkeepers and owners of other commercial establishments.
Jain stated that both the authorities should discuss the issue and must decide whether the BMC is authorized to take action or not. Jain stated that the Bhilai Steel Plant had provided land to third party allottees for commercial purposes. At some places, the readymade shops and buildings were also provided on lease to the people for running shops and conducting other commercial activities.
Jain stated that the BSP never followed the National Building Code. Further, the BSP authorities imposed fine and collected penal rent from the shopkeepers for illegal and unauthorized constructions for regularizing the same. When the shopkeepers are already paying penal rent and fine to BSP, they why are the BMC officials conducting surveys and inspections at shops and buildings situated in BSP Township and are taking plenary action against them, questioned Jain. He alleged that the BMC officials are unnecessarily harassing the shopkeepers of Bhilai Township and the growing resentment could lead to unpleasant situations.
He added that the third party allotees and lease holders of buildings and shops of market places are ready to cooperate with the administration for ensuring safety of people and students those who study in coaching centers and reside as paying guests. But this should be done in a proper and cooperative manner. The shopkeepers will not tolerate any tyrannical order, he added.
