Blast at BSP, no casualties

Bhilai, Feb 16:
A major blast triggered panic among the employees of Bhilai Steel Plant on Tuesday morning. The sound of this blast was heard in the radius of about ten kilometers. Fortunately, there were no casualties and the plant operations were not affected. According to information, the incidence occurred at Steel Melting Shop at around 05:40 hrs. Some of the equipments kept in the nearby control rooms and offices were damaged due to shock waves of the blast.
BSP Public Relations Department informed that after completion of tapping of metal from Convertor – A in Convertor Shop of SAIL-Bhilai Steel Plant’s Steel Melting Shop 2, the lance on right hand side of convertor got jammed at bottom level of convertor. While drawing up the lance in the morning hours of Feb 16, 2021 at around 5.41 AM, it was found that cooling water from the lance had collected at the bottom of the Converter. The Convertor was slowly tilted so as to drain the water collected inside down on to the ground below. During the process of tilting of Convertor, a piece of hot slag got dislodged and fell down on the ground, coming in contact with the water, resulting in a low intensity blast with loud noise.
There has been no injury to anyone because of this incident. Operations in Convertor Shop are continuing as usual. There has been no loss to any critical equipment of the shop. All important equipment were tested immediately after the incident and found to be functioning as normal.
