Assembly Elections: Battle for single-phase poll in Goa is divergent from 2017, spike in number of candidates registered

The political scenario of Goa assembly elections is quite different from 2017 elections in the state. As many as 24 legislators of 40 assembly seats have switched parties in the last five years.

AIR correspondent reports that this time 301 candidates are in the fray for the single-phase assembly elections in the state.

This election has witnessed an increase in the number of candidates by 50, compared to the 2017 assembly election. This time for the first time BJP is contesting on all 40 seats. Congress is contesting on 37 seats while the party has given three seats to its allies partner   Goa Forward Party( GFP). Trinamool Congress is contesting Goa assembly elections for the first time. TMC  is trying its luck on 26 seats while its allies partner Mahatrawadi Gomantak Party ( MGP) on 13 seats. Aam Aadmi Party( AAP) which did not get even a  single seat during last assembly election is contesting 39 seats. The party has supported one independent candidate. NCP and Shiv Sena alliance are contesting on 12 and 11 seats respectively. Other new parties including Revolutionary Goans Party, Jai Maha Bharath party, Goencho Swabhiman Party, and Sambhaji Brigade have also put up candidates. 82 independent candidates are also in the fray.

Goa will go to the assembly polls on 14th of February and The counting of votes will take place on 10th of March.
