29 students fall ill after consuming ‘peanut chikki’

Bhilai, Dec 09: On Thursday, 29 students of the government primary school in village Kolihapuri fell sick after consuming peanut chikki during the lunch break. The students complaining of vomiting and stomach pain were rushed to District Hospital. All the students have been discharged from the hospital after treatment. Home Minister Tamradhwaj Sahu visited the hospital to take stock of the situation. On his instructions, the DEO has issued suspension order for the Principal while plenary action is being taken against five other teachers.
According to information, the peanut chikki was distributed among 40 students in the school during lunch break under the state government’s campaign against malnutrition. Under this scheme, chikki is distributed among children twice in a week. The chikki is supplied by the Seeds Corporation through a production company “Healthy Snacks” based in Kharora, Raipur.
Around 10:00 hrs on Thursday, chikki was distributed among the students of class 2nd, 3rd and 4th standards. Most of them ate chikki but about 29 started complaining of stomach pain. All of them were rushed to District Hospital for treatment. 20 of the students were discharged after providing primary treatment. Others were discharged in the evening.
Taking the matter into serious cognizance, DEO has issued suspension order for the principal while one-increment of five teachers has been stopped. Cabinet Minister Tamradhwaj Sahu, District Panchayat President Shalini Yadava and others visited the hospital to enquire about the health of students.
